Autism Actions: Understanding & Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex and diverse developmental disorder that affects how a person communicates, interacts, behaves, and learns. In this professional development session, you will learn about the definition, characteristics, prevalence, causes, identification, assessment, and intervention of ASD.  The session will include presentations, videos, activities, and discussions to enhance your knowledge and skills in working with students with ASD.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

- Define ASD and its core characteristics

- Identify the prevalence and causes of ASD

- Recognize the diversity and strengths of individuals with ASD

- Describe the process and tools for screening and diagnosing ASD

- Explain the importance of early identification and intervention for ASD

This session is designed for school psychologists and other professionals who work with students with ASD or are interested in learning more about ASD. The session is based on the latest research and best practices in the field of autism education. The session is 6 hours long and includes breaks and activities for participants to talk in small groups. Join us for this informative and interactive session and discover how you can better understand and support students with ASD in your school or setting.

Our presenter is Peter Faustino, PsyD, current President Elect for the National Association of School Psychologists. He also serves as a member of NASP’s Government and Professional Relations Committee advocating for children’s mental health at the state and national level. Dr. Peter Faustino has been working with adolescents as a School Psychologist for more than 25 years.
